The most commonly used paper format is called DIN, established in 1922 and created by German engineer Dr. Walter Porstmann.

Within the DIN format we can find three different variants that differ in their actions: DIN-A DIN-B,-C DIN, DIN-D, DIN-E. And then are subdivided in other sub-formats dependent on number in question, with the DIN-A the broader measures. Know that all of them are always indicated in millimeters.

The reference format of the series A is called A0, whose area is 1 square meter. And from this measure are born smaller sizes. Each format of the series A by dividing in half the long side of the next larger format. Thus A1 is half of A0 on its longest side, and A2 is half of A1 by its longest side, and so in proportion to all formats up to the A10 which is the smallest of the series.

Within the DIN-A, the most used formats on a daily basis are A-4 (210 x 297 mm) and A-3 (297 x 420 mm). And the less common are those that go from DIN-A-5 to DIN-A10 because its so small.

DIN stands for Deutsches Institut für Normung (German Institute for Standardization).
